I have had an ileostomy and have a stoma. I am still experiencing mucus discharge from my rectum on a regular basis. I had the operation a year ago, is this common?

As long as the rectum is there mucus discharge will happen. If you’re thinking wow, this is a lot more than normal, you should call your consultant.

Me too. I have an ileostomy and get mucus draining from my rectal area, mostly at night when asleep; I seem to get it most.
Also, why do you have an ileostomy? Do you have Crohn's disease?

Some people, like myself, were hating this mucus from the unattached stump. It is pretty disgusting, don't you think? And you encounter the situation unpredictably. A spit here... a spit there - in and out of the car, or bending, sitting.

Another thing with me though was bloody discharge, not just mucus. Crohn's-colitis developed in that stump.

No brainer having it all removed and sewn up (just last year).

Best decision made.

Yep, that's what's meant to happen, eating and chewing triggers the digestive system and that is part of it.

Yep. It is normal… unless it becomes bloody, changes color, increases, etc… then contact your physician and do not wait!  It took me quite a while before I accepted the fact that this will continue indefinitely. Wearing protective pads daily was not my idea of feeling sexy or great…especially because I thought that I had left that behind after I went through peri-menopause and then menopause. It’s not pleasant. But then again, I think of the alternative and then reality hits. And, Reality sucks at times as well… It truly is an ongoing adjustment… for me, anyway. And I believe for most of us.
