Finding a Dress for a Wedding with a Transverse Ostomy

I'm at a loss. I have a transverse ostomy (it's directly above my belly button, pretty much centered between my breasts and belly button).

My sister is getting married in May, and I am having an awful time trying to find a dress (honestly, any kind of clothing besides baggy shirts and jackets) that hides my bag.

I'm dealing with the ostomy itself okay. But my self-esteem is taking a hit because I can't hide it, and I just hate the way it looks.

Edit to add: any color is fine, I'm plus size, and also tall (5'10)

Any advice or suggestions?

Very loose, soft, forgiving material. Very cool for May. Just a thought… I'm sure you'll get more suggestions!

I prefer short sleeves or sheer sleeves, but a strappy dress wouldn't bother me.

Length doesn't matter much to me, but I'm 5'10" with long legs, so some shorter dresses (calf/knee length) don't look right on me.

Color doesn't matter much, but I'll double-check with my sister to be sure.

That's really pretty, but the placement of my ostomy will be too noticeable in something like this. I'm plus size, and my ostomy bag is visible even with some T-shirts and sweatshirts.

Any color is fine with my sister. She said my mom is wearing black; I may follow suit.

My parents and I are all walking my sister down the aisle because my sister is 'extra.' LOL πŸ˜‚ πŸ˜‚

I think with the position of your ostomy being front and center, that an empire line dress or top - fitted at the boobs and flowing out directly below - could work, either a dress or a dressy top with a skirt.

Similar to below, although these aren't as high-waisted as what I was thinking of.

I personally prefer patterns to block colors as I think they hide more, although black can hide a multitude of sins (as long as it's not too glossy a fabric).

I wear shirts similar to below because they are so "flowy," and I always feel good in them regardless of my "fluffy" status!

I just noticed one in black (below) from Walmart that could be dressed up with some bling!

And even though I'm not a fan of throwaway "fast fashion" as can be found at Temu and Shein, good grief, those prices are cheap! I think it's the "free delivery" that gets us in!

This is just a few of what came up when I searched "empire line dressy tops"! πŸ˜…

What about this style? It comes in a large variety of sizes. It is good to wear light control high-waisted underwear with dresses to hold the bag down but not squeeze. From Anthropologie.com, there are lots of colors and sales sometimes. This dress type is very popular on this site. I have it in green.

I think so. I just googled β€œempire waist midi dress,” and the ones I posted popped up. The black one was from Nordstrom Rack, the brown one was from Amazon, and the chartreuse one was from Kohl's.

This one too, and you could have it as loose as needed. Only 2 colors, though.

I've been wearing Duluth Trading No Yank Tanks that have a built-in bra and are slightly snug down my hips. It holds the bag in place and is not so noticeable. You could wear that underneath your dress.

I find patterned fabric camouflages a lot. My ostomies are as high as yours, and the urostomy in particular tends to bulge... kidneys never stop or take a break.

I used to prefer solids but am developing a taste for prints because they distract the eye and make bags less noticeable.

Maxi/sundresses, like some have already posted, are comfortable and have a nice flow around the midsection. I have a huge midline scar, and my ostomy is right on the edge of it, so I've had trouble finding things at first that wouldn't make it the center of attention. But all the ideas and pictures I've seen posted look great. Good luck, and just remember to have fun and take an emergency backup kit just in case (extra supplies). πŸ«‚ πŸ€—

Something like this would probably also work. The capelet would hide the outline.

What about a simple dress with a soft flowing scarf that goes around your middle.

I was in a similar situation when my daughter got married. I had only had the colostomy for under a year, and finding clothes that hid it and helped me feel like me was rough. I found a dress at the wedding shop where my daughter bought her dress. I never would have thought of looking there. It is a black dress with a sheer patterned, flowy overlay. It was perfect. Still is. It covered everything and still made me feel good. I'll take pics....

All of these styles look great and should hide things very well. Good choices.

Try a wraparound band or slip-on stealth belt. $45-110. Smooth, all the way around, no bulges. Comes in many colors to blend in with your gown. Shouldn't see it in wedding pictures. Everyone's looking at the bride.
