hi my friends , does anyone know how to avoid another obstruction ? i have a colostomy , my ileom is paralyzed . need to take 20ml of lactulose, 1 sachet of movicol and 100ml of pear juicy every evening after my mealtime to hopefully have an output every night . being wheelchair bound because of a spinal disability since 26 years old doesn't help of mobility problems . my food intake is  mainly plan meat, restricted fresh vegetables without to much high stringy fibre . never any bulb , pulses ,or cabbage , onions or garlic , skin and spicy vegetable .simple  carbohydrates ,no white one , never nuts or stone fruits and skin fruits only peeled applies , pears maybe some citrus fruits . general staying away from foods which clog me up . some fatty foods are okay in moderation . been told to drink up to 3litre water a day , must drink plenty anyway because having the supra pubic catheter . since the last obstruction my output is very irregular ...any suggestions please

p.s. always got runny or slightly jelly like poo. never feel bowel movement . lucky that the large hollister one piece pouch is leak free , and only spills over into blues at removal .

Hi schneckerm88!

I have an ileostomy ('09) ... and I had blockages/clogs much more frequently than I do now. I really feel for you with the added issues of the paralyzed ileom and being chair bound. That's not going to help anything passing!

Is you colostomy fairly new? If you are, I'm wondering if things will settle down with a little time?

From reading what you're doing (that's also pretty much my diet, except for the lactulose and movicol -- & fresh vegies/fruit which still don't pass) ... I can't see what else to do. But I'm looking at it from an ileo's viewpoint, not a colo's ... there are differences.

I'd skip the fresh fruit and vegies ... but maybe the roughage helps things to pass with a colostomy? Is that what you were told? That you do need some roughage in your system? If not, then I'd try doing without anything 'fresh' for awhile and see what happens.

We're all so darned different with tolerances, etc.

I hope you find some answers soon. Blockages are one of the last 'scary things' for me with my ileostomy - the rest of the whole darned bag have become 2nd nature and a part of me. The ER, the nasal gastric tube, the pain ... whenever I look at a fresh fruit with longing ... those memories keep me on track
