I had the ileostomy reversal a month ago I am still feeling a lot of rectal pain and am trying to control my elimination but often have accidents daily.  Does anyone know how long it takes to stop hurting and to get control?  I kind of feel like I have uc again.  I'm glad the ostomy is gone though.

Hi Pit. I had a reversal back in 2004 but did not experience any loss of control or continuous pain. I remember, however, that I had some irritation similar to the pressure caused by UC. I think by now your situation should be better than what you describe.  I am sure you will be seeing your surgeon shortly for a follow-up.

Hi there!

It took me about 2 months for the pain to subside and start gaining real control. Give yourself some more time. You have to learn how to eat and poop all over again. Hopefully it gets better!

I am sure your body will adjust.  It does take longer than we think it should

.  I am over 6 months out and am still having accidents.  But I had radiation/infection/low anastomosis so some of my muscles may have had nerve damage.  It is getting better - used to be daily.  Now it is a day or two a week.

I take some type of enzyme and probiotics to make the food travel slower through my system. That has helped.  I also take some metamucil (1 tsp in 2 oz of water) twice a day.  Too much of that and my stomach hurts too much.

Raw vegetables are hard to handle.  Fruit is pretty good.  And cooked vegetables are ok.  Have to have those or our bodies won't heal as it should.

Sugar causes problems.  I cannot drink a carbonated drink or my stomach blows up like a balloon.  I drink lots of water.

Hope things are much better for you and you get back to feeling great with no accidents.

Have a Merry Christmas.
