Best Tape for Securing Ostomy Pouches?

Which tape should I use for the following:

Once my wafer and pouch are on ... I'm wanting to tape the upper edge of the pouch to my body (part of the tape will be on the tape portion of the wafer).  Sometimes my pants 'catch' on the upper edge of the pouch and pulls. I'm thinking the tape will remedy this.

I snuck a roll of tape from the hospital (the semi-clear tape that they used to adhere IV needles to my arm) but it doesn't come off as easily as I'm hoping some other tape might.

Many thanks for any suggestions.

3M Micropore paper tape is the best! It even comes in flesh-colour. Doesn't come off in water, doesn't leave residue, and lasts for days!

Hi Beatrice, I use Clinimed Hydro-Frame hydrocolloid flange extensions - I like these as I find they look neater as they are ready shaped (but who really cares?) they adhere well and they are sort of flesh coloured - BUT,  you can see through them if your flange is beginning to leak which is what I like about them best - many a leak has been saved before it escaped completely! However, not sure if they may be expensive for those of you who have to pay etc?

I agree, the Micropore tape is the gentlest on my skin. All of my local pharmacies carry it on their shelves. Quite cheap. Works well to hold down the plastic I use to waterproof my still-not-quite-healed incision site while showering.

CAN ANYONE RECOMMEND (oops caps) a tape that is waterproof and does NOT come off?

I have used every single waterproof tape out there available at the pharmacy. None of it stays on...I sont care about it being easy on my skin either....I DONT WANT THIS BASTARD TO MOVE!! lol

Hannah, the stuff I use is waterproof, in fact it often sticks better after having a bath as it sort of softens with the warmth of the water. But I would never have a bath just after changing it, it needs to have been on a while but then it is fine.

I think it is made with the same stuff the adapt/eakin rings are made of with a sort of plastic covering on the outside so it isn't sticky.

A couple of tapes that are my favorite which hold up to water and work well:  3M MEDIPORE and there is the Pink Tape, also known as HY TAPE (has a zinc backing and very waterproof).

Thanks Rachel & Whoa,

Would I get these from a ostomy supply place, because the pharmacy's here don't have it?

Hi

You can get it from any of the major supply companies: www.edgepark.com  Parthenon, Liberty Medical, Sterling, Byrom should all have it.  Often insurance doesn't cover tape for ostomates (in the USA), so you may want to ask if they give a cash discount.  Some do.

Good luck!

Another good tape (well, it works well for me), is Omnigon Hydroframe made by Welland (UK co.), order no. is XWAFH33.  Should be available at ostomy supplies.

When I use this tape it usually lasts a week until I need to change, waterproof even with swimming, so great for showers and baths too.

Hope you find what you're looking for.

Is 3M Medipore a slightly opaque white tape - the tape used in hosp to adhere IV lines, etc.

It said 3M on it, but not Medipore. Can't find any at my pharmacies that say Medipore.

The one I'm using is too hard to get off.

Mike, I know, I'm curious because it sure would be a cheap alternative to the medical tape that doesn't seem to work. lol

I work on a military installation where we issue the uniforms. They other day a guy bought some of that 90 MPH duct tape, some survival cord and a knife

I had a patient tell me she used Duct tape when traveling until she could find supplies...luggage lost.  Apparantly worked too!  I've had a couple of patients come to clinic duct taped too.  Would be pretty rough on the skin long term though!

Medipore is more cloth like, comes in 2" width, expensive but kind to skin, stands up to water

Micropore is the 3M paper tape, variable on standing up to water

Transpore is the clear tape and does stand up to moisture fairly well for some.

Most pharmacies will carry paper tape of some sort, the others you usually need to order from a medical supply company.

Hope that helped.

Any of you folks ever heard of Hypafix?

Hypafix tape is a non-woven polyester fabric coated with a layer of an acrylic adhesive, is available in a range of widths and is sometimes referred to as a `dressing retention sheet'.      The tape is permeable to water vapour and is unlikely to cause peristomal tissue maceration or be adversely affected by sweating. As the tape is coated with an acrylic adhesive, it may generally be used by ostomates who have exhibited an adverse reaction to adhesives containing rubber or resin. The polyester fabric is very wear-resistant, once applied, it may be left in position for prolonged periods.

Pretty excellent stuff, i often use it and have never had a problem with it.x

As someone who has pulled off Duct Tape from all kinds of stuff ... I sure would hesitate to use it on my delicate skin

-- but anything in an emergency!

Thanks for describing the various tapes -- now I know that it's the Medipore I want to get. I've got the Micropore and it is quite good.

Sweede and all

Hypafix is great stuff (Smith and Nephew).  3M came out with Medipore years after Hypafix, it  is 3Ms equivalent.  I swtiched my hospital out to Medipore as it was easier to work with as it comes in a roll, has perforations every 2 inches so you don't have to cut it, and I think  a bit less expensive (or was).

I wonder if 3M or Smith and Nephew would send out a sample if you asked???  Worth a try.

I use a flesh colored tape by Nexcare and it's called "absolute waterproof tape". It's very stretchy & cushiony & sticks really well. I've been taping around the outside of both my flanges and am happy to say it is WONDERFUL! My showers are much happier and no leaks! I got it at CVS but have also seen it at Rite Aid & several other drugstores.  $5 - $6 a roll.

Hi,

I really like "Hypafix", it feels great on your skin and lets it breath.

It feels really secure and its hypo allergenic.

I was given a sample for a product called  "Securi-T" strips from Genairex in FL at the UOAA conference in New Orleans in 09. its a crescent shaped piece a little ticker than tape, and the rep told me it could be placed around the stoma(two pieces will cover all the way around your barrier) directly on the skin as a skin barrier -or  placed on top of the tape for added water proofing protection. I havent have any leak issues for well-over 10 yrs, and being i was at the conference and knew i would be using the pool -I slapped two pieces over my barrier tape to test drive it. well I visited the pool multiple times over the 3 days i was there plus showered daily and when I was home several days later and was time to change my barrier  -it was still holding up as good as new so its by far the best water-proofing product Ive yet tried
