Dietary Advice for New Colostomy Patients

Hi, I am new to having a colostomy, and my tummy has been hurting lately. I know it's the food that I am eating, and I need help finding a list of safe and healthy foods I can eat to give to the place where I live so they can help.

If it's really new, you need to ease back into eating foods. Otherwise, you should be able to eat most things without issue. Everyone is a bit different as to what foods affect them; it's a learning curve that you'll have to figure out.

Thank you for your question.
There are a number of such dietary lists available from different sources.
On here, it used to be that anyone could access them, but it now seems that you have to be a premium member. However, there is such a pdf list in the section at the top of the page 'COLLECTIONS >premium content>care & wellness>Nutrition and Dietary Management'.
Alternatively, you could try these for freebies:
1) Almost any of the manufacturers would provide such information (They often have nutritionists on staff)
2) Your local hospital or stoma nurse would have this information
3) I believe that the Ostomy Association of America give out this stuff
4) If all else fails, the internet is always a great source of information for almost anything nowadays

Hello... Hope you're feeling okay after your colostomy. It's a lot to get used to, physically and mentally. I would keep foods simple and avoid stuff like raw onions, fibrous veggies, chili, garlic, and foods with pips, seeds, and tough skins (low residue diet). Proteins such as chicken, fish, and eggs are fine and will also help the healing process. Your stoma will take time to settle, then you can gradually test out more interesting foods. Make sure you consider taking vitamin and mineral supplements. Sports drinks are also good for topping up minerals. Oh... and jelly babies and marshmallows can help on days when output is high or liquidy! 😁

I'd go with whatever looks good. It took me a while before normal stuff was good again. I couldn't even do pizza; it was yuck. Try a burger and fries or whatever tickles your fancy. I still haven't found anything that does me wrong. I always keep prunes in my diet; it keeps everything the same consistency. Stay away from carbonated drinks; that's my only advice. Some are okay for me, but everybody's different. It gets easier, I promise. Good luck, and don't listen to me. I'm just a country boy. I've been known to be wrong. Listen to yourself.
